Barbarus

What is Barbarus

Barbarus is a medieval high-fantasy setting, where a myriad of different races and civilisations live and coexist, navigating the fields of negotiation, battle and trade. As well as each other, the inhabitants of Barbarus also find themselves having to contend with nature, and the bizarre and powerful creations of the natural world.

Barbarus does not contain what many would consider the ‘traditional’ fantasy races. There are no elves in the trees, nor dwarves deep underground. No dragons can be found in the skies, and magic wielders are considered by the vast majority to be extinct, or maybe to have never existed at all. Taverns are more likely to be filled with drunk locals or travelling merchants than adventurers looking for their next quest. Despite this, stories can still be found in every corner of the world, from great warriors battling against gods to ordinary citizens protecting their homes from fearsome beasts and tyrannical leaders.

At its heart, Barbarus is a hopeful setting. Although great darkness and mature themes do exist, the stories more often end with the defeat of evil, and the accomplishment of great deeds. These victories however, often come at a cost, and the right choices are not always evident. Whilst darkness will always rear its head in some form, there will always be people willing and ready to fight against it.

The Natural World

Much like the people that inhabit it, the landscapes that can be found across Barbarus vary greatly. From thick jungles with trees that stretch above the clouds to scorching deserts where the sand itself has turned to glass, the world is filled with strange and unique habitats, some magical and some not, and whilst grand cities and bustling trade routes exist, the majority of the land remains untamed and unexplored.
